KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee to repair damage to his cartilage this week and could miss the remainder of the season. The rookie out of Cincinnati has been dealing with what the Chiefs thought was a bone bruise since training camp. A series of MRI exams had come back negative, so orthopedic surgeon Dr. Cris Barnthouse did an arthroscopic procedure Tuesday that revealed the injury. Head trainer Rick Burkholder acknowledged it could be season-ending, but coach Andy Reid said the Chiefs were not in a hurry to place Kelce on injured reserve. "Were going to give it a little time. Weve done that to this point," Reid said. "Theres nothing lost there, just to give it time. ... Its a shame that it happened, but the procedure, it happens. Ive been there personally with knees. I get the picture. I know how it works." Burkholder said Kelce had returned to the Chiefs on Wednesday to begin rehab, and that the training staff will attempt to get him on the field at some point this season. "I think this is an injury people get better from," Burkholder said. "Hes a young guy. Hes got a good, healthy knee. We protected him so he didnt do any additional damage. That gives him the best chance to come back and have a good, long career." Kelce has not played this season after the Chiefs selected him in the third round of the draft. His absence, along with that of Anthony Fasano, who has been dealing with a sprained ankle, has left the Chiefs perilously thin at tight end. In other injury news, linebacker Justin Houston has passed a series of concussion tests after taking a blow to his head and neck last Sunday. Reid said the leagues second-leading sacker would not practice on Wednesday but should be ready for Sundays game against Oakland. Houston already has 8 1/2 sacks during the Chiefs 5-0 start. "Hes going through all the protocol and so far hes clear of any signs of (a concussion)," Reid said. "But were taking him through that whole protocol on that and just making sure. The kid is doing a nice job and we dont want to do anything to jeopardize him right now." Running back Jamaal Charles was also held out of practice because of blisters that cropped up on his feet a couple weeks ago. He played last Sunday at Tennessee but is still dealing with them. "As a quarterback Ive had my fair share of blisters," said QB Alex Smith, "but nothing that looks like his. You develop your own secret to get through them." Charles wasnt available in the locker room Wednesday. "Theyve got to be bugging him," Chiefs tight end Sean McGrath said. "Its something he has to take care of and the training staff will do a great job of getting him ready." Luis Gonzalez Jersey . It was the bullpen that kept it from being a showcase night. The Tigers got three home runs from the middle of their batting order -- Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and J.D. Martinez -- and an outstanding starting pitching performance from Rick Porcello, who allowed two runs and five hits in eight innings while striking out a season-high 10. But their bullpen, which has struggled this season, allowed three runs in the ninth inning on three hits and two walks and forced manager Brad Ausmus to use two relievers and to have two more throwing in the bullpen." "We were scrambling a little bit in the last inning," Ausmus said. "You dont want to have to get that many arms up when youre ahead by that much." But there was plenty of cushion Alex Avila had three hits and drove in two runs and Ian Kinsler had three hits and an RBI for the Tigers, who scored in all eight innings they batted, had 16 hits and got at least a hit from each batter in the starting lineup. "It was perfect the way everyone hit. Everyone contributed in some fashion," Ausmus said. "Nice to see us get some separation. Our offence has been kind of sluggish the last week-to-10 days." Porcello (13-5) tied teammate Max Scherzer for the American League lead in victories. "Just had a good feel for my off-speed stuff and had a good changeup and cutter," said Porcello, who laboured through the first two innings before finding his groove in the third. "He had some rreally good movement and kept pitches in the strike zone," Colorados Charlie Blackmon said.dddddddddddd"He was able to mix them up pretty well." Earlier in the day, newly acquired David Price joined his new teammates and a starting rotation that also includes Justin Verlander and Anibal Sanchez. "He basically takes the ball and goes the distance," Porcello said of Price. ". Going to be a lot of fun playing with him." Colorado starter Tyler Matzek (2-6) allowed eight runs and 10 hits in 4-plus innings. RARE FEAT It was the first time Detroit scored in all eight innings of a nine-inning home win since 1912. TAPE MEASURE BLAST Cabrera broke a 2-2 tie with two outs in the third with his 17th home run, a tape measure solo shot, that put Detroit up for good. The drive to centre field was estimated by ESPN Stats & Info at 445 feet. "You cant help to be excited when you see that," Porcello said. "I was a fan there. Pretty fun." ROCKIES MOVE Colorado selected the contract of outfielder Jason Pridie from Triple-A Colorado Springs and left-handed pitcher Pedro Hernahdez was designated for assignment.
