The Winnipeg Goldeyes signed right-handed pitcher Jason Jarvis to a contract for the 2014 season on Wednesday. Jarvis, 26, was acquired from the Sioux City Explorers late last season for three players to be named later, who turned out to be left-handed pitcher Edgar Osuna and infielders Kevin Moesquit and Nate Samson. In four starts with the Goldeyes, Jarvis went 2-1 with a 2.19 ERA. He threw a complete-game shutout August 22 at St. Paul. Three of his four starts were quality starts. "In the short period of time he spent with us, he was very impressive," said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney. "Hes what you look for in a starting pitcher in indepent baseball. He is a durable innings-eater. He really gave us an opportunity at the end of the season to stay relevant in the playoff race. Although we came up short, hes one of the many pieces I feel that can help us achieve a title in 2014." Overall last season, Jarvis, who makes his off-season home in Sioux City, went 7-11 with a 3.92 ERA in 22 starts with the Goldeyes and Explorers. He tossed three complete games, including a pair of complete-game shutouts. Jarvis was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in the 25th round of the 2006 MLB amateur draft, but elected to attend Arizona State University. After leaving Arizona State early in their 2008 season, he joined the Lincoln Saltdogs, where he went 4-6 with a 2.98 ERA in 23 games. He was then selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 23rd round of the 2008 MLB amateur draft and played the rest of the 2008 season in their system, as well as the 2009 and 2010 campaigns. He joined the Joliet Slammers of the Frontier League to begin the 2011 season before landing in Sioux City midway through that season. In 84 games at the independent level, including 67 starts, Jarvis holds a 24-32 record and 4.22 ERA. Jarvis is the first player to sign a contract with the Goldeyes for the 2014 season.
